These are all phrases that have been hitting headlines around the world repeatedly over the last few years. To some they might feel like just ‘the latest buzzwords’. What they actually represent is a growing lack of tolerance globally for behaviours that make people feel unsafe, unwelcome or targeted at work.
Many governments around the world are going a step further and introducing significant penalties through Health and Safety legislation if an employee should suffer psychological harm at the hands of an employer. This can include large fines and in some cases, jail time for company directors.
The media are also quick to “name and shame” organisations that fall into disrepute due to culture-related issues, further damaging reputation and brand.
In essence, we live in a world now more than ever, where leaving workplace culture to chance and hoping for the best is a very risky prospect!
The ROI of organisational culture is undeniable, culture does matter. While there may be confounding factors, a healthy and aligned culture increases employee productivity, satisfaction, creativity, decreases burnout and turnover and strengthens an organisation’s overall performance. When a culture is strong these performance metrics are thriving. When elements of the culture are not aligned, these metrics start to decline.
